Modalert is used in the treatment of excessive daytime sleepiness associated with the narcoleptic syndrome, obstructive sleep apnoea, and shift-work sleep disorder. Modalert is very popular as a study drug (nootropic), as well as for the other off-label uses such as ADHD, depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, parkinsons disease, firomyalgia, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, and even weight loss.
In the treatment of the narcoleptic syndrome or obstructive sleep apnoea, Modalert is given orally in a dose of 200 to 400 mg daily, in two divided doses, in the morning and at midday, or as a single dose in the morning. For the treatment of shift-work sleep disorder, the daily dose is 200 mg taken as a single dose 1 hour before starting work. An initial dose of 100 mg daily should be used in the elderly and adjusted as necessary.
Modalert is usually very well tolerated, however a some patients do experienced side effects. Most side effects which are experienced are mild and short lasting, but you should always report any side effect you experience to your doctor, doing so as soon as possible if any persist or worsen.
Side effects which have been reported by patients include: headache, diarrhoea, nervousness or anxiety, tremors. insomnia, hypertension (high blood pressure), palpitations, tachycardia, abnormal liver function.
